Dear colleagues,

You are cordially invited to the IPB seminar which will be held on Monday, 29 May 2023 at 12:00 in the Zvonko Marić lecture hall of the Institute of Physics Belgrade. The talk entitled

Testing an alternative to quantum mechanics

will be given by Prof. Dr. Dejan Stojković (University at Buffalo - The State University of New York). The abstract of the talk:

In this talk we will present an alternative formulation of quantum mechanics, whose basic starting point is pure information represented by binary sequences, without any reference to space, time and matter. Directly from these binary sequences, we will derive highly non-trivial QM results: rules of angular momentum addition, Clebsch-Gordan coefficients and Wigner’s d-matrix formula. In particular, Wigner's formula can be used to describe experiments with two sequential Stern-Gerlach detectors relatively rotated by some angle (which actually represents the first step toward formulating an emergent quantum spacetime). Being inherently discrete, and matching quantum mechanical predictions only in the continuous limit where the length of the sequences is infinite, this formalism can be tested with very precise state-of-the-art experiments in quantum optics.

Best regards,
Antun Balaž
