Abstract

At least up to date, quantum mechanics can be considered the most
successful, fundamental theory that explains the physical World.
Nonetheless, the descriptions provided by this theory in any of its pictures
(Heisenberg, Schrödinger or Feynman) are purely probabilistic-statistical.
This leaves a question mark in the place where one would ask for an analog
to formulations based on classical trajectories (Newton, Euler-Lagrange or
Hamilton-Jacobi). The purpose of this talk is to show that such a question
can indeed be answered by incorporating into the quantum mechanics based on
the Schrödinger equation a description of particle motions. The theory
arising from this reformulation, namely Bohmian mechanics, is a theory of
rays and waves, such as the former Hamilton's conception of classical
mechanics (and analogous to classical optics). Different examples related
to diffraction and interference will be examined in the light of Bohmian
quantum mechanics, from slits experiments (the double slit experiment and
the Talbot effect) to surface diffraction.
