Title: Modeling the Early Universe with Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

Abstract:

Ultra-relativistic heavy ions produce matter at temperatures comparable

to the early universe 1 microsecond after the big bang. The ions

involved in these collisions produce suffer enormous decelerations

during which the kinetic energy of the ions is used to produce tens of

thousands of particles. The interacting matter created in these

collisions behaves as a very opaque fluid with a viscosity close to the

quantum limit. In addition the hydrodynamic evolution of the matter

seems to start extremely rapidly after the ions collide suggest that the

matter reaches thermal equilibrium almost immediately. By studying these

collisions on an event by event basis we are starting to glimpse the

state of this matter at the moment it was created. Recent data provides

a window into the birth of a system that serves as a model for the early

universe.
