Dear colleagues,

You are cordially invited to the SCL seminar of the Center for the Study of Complex Systems, which will be held on Thursday, 17 August 2017 at 14:00 in the library reading room “Dr. Dragan Popović" of the Institute of Physics Belgrade. The talk entitled

Lagrangian methods for the study of the ocean

will be given by Dr. Michael Uleysky (V. I. Il'ichev Pacific Oceanological Institute of the Far-Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladivostok, Russia). Abstract of the talk:

In this talk we will discuss modeling of Lagrangian transport in application to transport of water masses in seas and oceans [1-3]. The Lagrangian approach, in contrast to the Eulerian approach, not only reveals objects such as eddies and currents, but also clarifies their composition and origin. Lagrangian fronts, lines separating waters with different physicochemical characteristics and/or history, are of great practical importance, since they are common zones of enhanced bioproductivity. The most simple application of the Lagrangian approach is tracking of particles initially located in a specified region. It can be also useful for estimating spreading of pollution.
