Poštovane kolege
U petak 14 Decembra preminuo je Art Phelps poznati Američki fizičar
iz fizike niskotemperaturskih plazmi, atomske i molekularne fizike,
fizike gasnih lasera i mnogo drugih oblasti.
Kod Arta Phelpsa su kao postdoktoranti boravili Brana Jelenković i
Zoran Petrović, posetili su ga mnogi od naših istraživača a on je
našu zemlju i institut posetio nekoliko puta. Može se slobodno reći
da je poslednjih 25 godina imao neprekidno saradnju sa nekim od
naših istraživača.
Veliki doprinosi A Phelpsa su pre svega
- formiranje swarm tehnike eksperimentalne, rešenja Boltzmannove
jednačine i analize za određivanje preseka
-kinetika metastabila i pobuđenih stanja u retkim gasovima
-trapovanje emisije svetlosti u gasnim pražnjenjima
-značajan doprinos formiranju ideje o disocijativnoj rekombinaciji i
zahvatu
-modelovanje kinetike gasnih lasera
-prva merenja na visokim E/N i doprinos brzih neutrala ekscitaciji u
gasnim pražnjenjima
-osnovi fizike Townsendovih pražnjenja, uticaj naelektrisanja i
zavisnosti koeficijenta sekundarne emisije od energije jona
-modelovanje sekundarne emisije u gasnim pražnjenjima na osnovu
podataka za binarne sudare
-multi term proračuni funkcije raspodele elektrona
-tumačenje anomalnog Dopplerovog širenja u velikom broju gasova
-određivanje setova preseka za veliki broju gasova (retki gasovi,
azot, vodonik, deuterijum, kiseonik, SF6, ...) koji uključuju
elektronske preseke, preseke za jone i brze neutrale i mnogi drugi.
AV Phelps je prvi dobitnik Will Allis nagrade APSa za gasnu
elektroniku. Svoju karijeru započeo je u Westuinghouse Research
laboratories a nastavio na Univerzitetu Kolorada i NISTu u
laboratoriji JILA.

Dear Friends at JILA
On the news of passing of Art Phelps I wish to send JILA my letter as
his former postdoc and colleague.
Art was one of the leaders and even founders of the modern physics
of ionized gases and atomic and molecular physics. His vast knowledge
and experience was always a major source of ideas and inspiration for
all of us. Just reading his footnotes is an amazing experience and a
source of education to his colleagues that is second to none. Art also
had a principle of performing quantitative tests as a necessary part of
research and was never satisfied with his tests until all parts of his
theory were of highest possible quality.
That is why the papers written by him last for many decades and that is
why the papers (a large number of them) still siting in his files are
better than most of the papers published nowadays.
Art has affected lives and careers of all the people that had luck to
have worked with him, he influenced many more and he shaped the whole
field by his knowledge, ideas and strict adherence to ethical and
scientific principles.
With his passing, JILA, scientific community and his colleagues have
lost a lot but with his career we have all gained a
contribution of a truly great man of science.
