Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to the opening event of the HIP-2D-QM Fall Workshop 2026 lecture series, the training workshop:
Writing Successful Proposals for Beamtime at Large-Scale Research Facilities: Before, During and After the Experiment
Date: 6 August 2026
Time: 10:00
Lecturer:
Prof. Ivana Evans
Department of Chemistry, Durham University, Durham DH1 3LE, UK
The Fall Workshop 2026 is a lecture series running from August through December, providing an engaging introduction to state-of-the-art experimental characterization techniques available at leading large-scale user facilities around the world. Designed for graduate students, early-career researchers, and scientists seeking to broaden their experimental expertise, the series presents advanced methods that are transforming research in condensed matter physics, solid-state chemistry, and materials science.
More information about the lecture series, including the full programme, is available on the workshop website:

Abstract
This training workshop will cover the entire cycle of conducting research at large-scale user facilities—from planning an experiment and preparing a successful beamtime proposal to carrying out the experiment and completing post-experiment activities, including report writing and publication of results.
These topics will be addressed both from a general perspective and in the specific contexts of solid-state physics and the chemistry of functional materials, with particular emphasis on accessing synchrotron and neutron facilities for studies of the structure and dynamics of functional materials across the chemical spectrum.
The session is designed as an interactive workshop, and participants are welcome to bring their own questions or draft beamtime proposals for discussion.

We look forward to welcoming you.

Kind Regards,
