Some of the publications by Dr. Iztok Cadez "Some reasons why the Nier type ion source is not reproducible" M. Kurepa, G. Josifov, S. Madzunkov and I. Cadez Chemical Industry, 52 (1998) 530 - 41 Here we present a computer analysis of the ion trajectories inside a Nier type ion source with two parallel plate electrodes in the repeller-extractormode. This analysis was undertaken in order to find an explanation for the very large differences that appear in relative abundances of ions from particular molecular species obtained by different experimentalists. It is obvious that there are effects in a Nier type ion source that have not been studied properly so far, although very many authors have tried to solve this puzzle. Recent angular and energy analysis of ions, performed in our laboratory, especially of the light ones from dissociative ionization processes, has started to shed some new light on the problem. "The influence of a thin gold film on vibrational excitation of hydrogen molecules" I. Cadez, R. I. Hall, M. Landau, F. Pichou and C. Schermann J. Chem. Phys. 106 (1997) 4745 - 52 The vibrational populations have been measured for hydrogen molecules issuing from a cell containing a mixture of atomic and molecular hydrogen in the presence of an incandescent tungsten filament. The cell walls were covered with a gold film by in situ evaporation. The gold film was observed to exist in two forms, the first being transformed irreversibly into the second by annealing. The observed behavior of the vibrational populations differed from those observed previously with other metals in that the relative distributions depended on the filament temperature. This behavior was interpreted as being the result of either special characteristics of the hydrogen - tungsten interaction at the filament or the presence of a potential barrier in the reaction path for the formation of hydrogen molecules by the process of recombinative desorption. "The formation of vibrationally excited hydrogen molecules on carbon surfaces" S. Gough, C. Schermann, F. Pichou, M. Landau, I. Cadez, and R. I. Hall Astron. Astrophys. 305 (1996) 687 - 93 A novel technique for the measurement of the excitation of molecular hydrogen formed on surfaces has been applied to the study of H2 formation on carbon. The results show that on certain carbon surfaces H2 may form in vibrational levels as high as v = 7, and that at a surface temperature of 90 K between 2.6 and 7 % of the molecules can be found in the v = 1 level. This supports the proposal that a significant contribution on the population of vibrationally excited hydrogen in the interstellar medium comes from the formation of molecular hydrogen on carbonaceous interstellar grains.
