Pure 3D Gravity: a status report

Pure general relativity with a negative cosmological constant can in 
principle be a constant UV theory on its own. Following the AdS/CFT 
correspondence, the boundary dual should be some two dimensional CFT. 
Nevertheless, finding the boundary dual for this simple bulk theory 
remains an open problem. In this talk, I will review the status for the 
boundary dual of pure 3D gravity. I will discuss the interpretation of 
this theory in terms of an ensemble of 2d CFTs, review the successes of 
this approach and mention open questions.
