Black Hole Microstructure

Iosif Bena (Universite Paris Saclay)

Black holes (BHs) connect gravity, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and 
astrophysics, and pose deep paradoxes: their Hawking evaporation 
violates quantum unitarity, the microstates underlying their enormous 
entropy are unknown, and at their singularities Einstein’s theory breaks 
down. All these paradoxes are resolved by the existence of a new 
structure at the scale of the BH horizon, a possibility supported by 
both quantum-information-theory arguments and explicit string-theory 
constructions. I will discuss the highly-unusual properties that this 
structure must have and how these properties emerge in the realization 
of this structure in String Theory via branes, fluxes, topology and 
enhanced quantum tunneling.
