  SCULPTURED THIN FILMS

  Akhlesh Lakhtakia

Abstract. Sculptured thin films (STFs) are assemblies of nanowires
that
can be fabricated from many different materials, typically via physical
vapor deposition onto rotating substrates. The curvilinear-nanowire
morphology of STFs is determined by the substrate motions during
fabrication. The optical properties, especially, can be tailored by
varying the morphology of STFs. In many cases prototype devices have
been fabricated for various optical, biological, and other
applications.

Biography. Akhlesh Lakhtakia received degrees from the Banaras Hindu
University (B.Tech. & D.Sc.) and the University of Utah (M.S. & Ph.D.),
in electronics engineering and electrical engineering, respectively. He
is the Charles Godfrey Binder (Endowed) Professor of Engineering
Science and Mechanics at the Pennsylvania State University. He is a
Fellow of SPIE, Optical Society of America, American Association for
the Advancement of Sciences, and Institute of Physics (UK). He is
presently the editor-in-chief of Journal of Nanophotonics. His current
research interests include nanotechnology, plasmonics, engineered
biomimicry, complex materials, metamaterials, and sculptured thin
films.
