Sociophysics and big data – analysis and prediction of social phenomena
Abstract:
Sociophysics, rapidly developing branch of physics, uses methods originating in statistical physics combined with concepts from social science to create a framework for quantitative study of a broad class of collective dynamical phenomena within society. Its main driving force is big data: the high-volume digital data that is becoming available about all aspects of human life. By using these data and concepts of sociophysics, physicist are trying to build a predictive, computational theories of social phenomena which can help us in making better policies, modelling sustainable urban development, creating better organizations and governments, i.e., engineering better social systems. In this talk we will show how we can use the data and methods of sociophysics to answer two different questions which occupy scholars' attention: 1) Are we witnessing the slowing down in fundamental science [1,2 ]? 2) Can we predict human mobility based on their communication patterns [3]?
