"Introduction to Strong Interactions and the Hadronic Spectrum"

Abstract:
Strong interaction is a fundamental force of Nature. It is responsible 
for the formation of
nucleons (protons, neutrons) and many other particles, collectively 
known as hadrons. Quantum
chromodynamics (QCD) is the currently accepted theory of the strong 
force. In this talk
we elaborate on the characteristic energy scales and degrees of freedom 
of QCD. We introduce
two concepts of central importance for the understanding of light 
hadron spectrum: namely,
those of chiral symmetry and its dynamical breaking.
We present the formalism of Dyson-Schwinger/Bethe-Salpeter equations 
(DSEs/BSEs) as a
possible framework to study QCD. By using approximations for DSEs which 
respect the chiral
symmtry, we arrive at good results for the light hadron spectrum. We 
comment on how our
calculation can be systematically improved in the future.
