"The RPW instrument on the Solar Orbiter mission: an overview"

 

Abstract:

Solar Orbiter is a mission dedicated to solar and heliospheric physics. It
was selected as the first medium-class mission of ESA's Cosmic Vision
2015-2025 Program. The program outlines key scientific questions which need
to be answered about the development of planets and the emergence of life,
how the Solar System works, the origins of the Universe, and the fundamental
physics at work in the Universe. The Solar Orbiter accommodates a set of in
situ and a set of remote-sensing instruments, with a total payload mass of
180 kg. The RPW experiment is unique amongst the Solar Orbiter instruments
in that it makes both in situ and remote-sensing measurements. RPW will
measure magnetic and electric fields at high time resolution using a number
of sensors/antennas, to determine the characteristics of electromagnetic and
electrostatic waves in the solar wind.
