"High-intensity XUV attosecond pulses for studies of molecular dynamics"

Abstract:

The relaxation dynamics of an ionized or excited molecular system involves
fundamental mechanisms such as electron transfer and migration as well as
nuclear motion. They can lead to ultrafast chemical reactions and specific
dissociations through, for instance, intramolecular rearrangements. These
processes occur on atto- to femtosecond timescales and can be followed in
time-resolved experiments using pump-probe techniques with ultrashort laser
pulses. Our main objective is to study the ultrafast processes involved in
complex molecular systems in the gas phase by using attosecond light pulses.

Such studies will be performed at the Lund Laser Centre (LLC - Sweden) as
well as at the Extreme Light Infrastructure - Attosecond Light Pulse Source
(ELI-ALPS - Hungary) using High-order Harmonic Generation (HHG) techniques
to provide intense extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulses in order to
make XUV/XUV pump-probe experiments using a high-resolution split-and-delay
unit. The state-of-the-art apparatus will be equipped with a detection
system able to measure energies and angular distributions of ions and
electrons simultaneously allowing to study relaxation dynamics in atoms and
time-dependent fragmentation of molecules and clusters. The studies will
focus on molecules of biological and astronomical/atmospheric interest in
order to investigate the ultrafast chemistry involved at a molecular level
after ionizing radiation.
