Dear colleagues,
You are cordially invited to the SCL online seminar of the Center for the Study of Complex Systems, which will be held on Thursday, 12 November 2020 at 15:00 on Zoom (link is given below). The talk entitled
Nonequilibrium dynamics of quantum gases in optical lattices
will be given by Ana Hudomal (Scientific Computing Laboratory, Center for the Study of Complex Systems, Institute of Physics Belgrade). Abstract of the talk:
Ultracold atoms provide one of the most promising platforms for quantum simulations. The focus of recent experiments in optical lattices is to enrich the set of physical models that can be simulated with cold atoms and to provide answers to some of the fundamental open questions. In this talk we will discuss the dynamical features of several relevant bosonic systems. In this way we will address a question of thermalization of a general isolated quantum system, as well as the possibility to investigate an interesting topological state in a cold-atom setup.
The thermalization of a general isolated quantum system has gained lot of attention recently. Nonintegrable systems are typically expected to thermalize, meaning that they lose all memory of their initial state, but there are several notable counterexamples. In particular, a new class of systems which exhibit unusual thermalization has been recently discovered – the systems with special eigenstates called quantum many-body scars. We will propose a realization of quantum many-body scars in a 1D bosonic lattice model with a “soft” constraint in the form of density-assisted hopping.
Another long-standing problem is the realization of topologically nontrivial models with ultracold atoms. These models are usually implemented in driven cold-atom setups. However, the interplay of driving and interactions typically leads to the thermalization and additional considerations are necessary in order to identify regimes where this process is slow and allows for the preparation and measurement of an interesting topological state.
