Dear colleagues,

You are cordially invited to the IPB COLLOQUIUM which will be held on Friday, 15 March 2024 at 12:00 in the “Zvonko Marić” lecture hall of the Institute of Physics Belgrade. The talk entitled

Atomic-scale imaging of exotic electronic phenomena in quantum materials

will be given by Prof. Dr. Ilija Zeljkovic (Department of Physics, Boston College, USA). The abstract of the talk:

Over the past few decades, the field of quantum materials has rapidly expanded to take condensed matter physics community by storm. The term quantum materials encompasses a wide range of solids, including correlated electron systems, unconventional superconductors, topological quantum matter and 2D Moire systems. In these materials, electron charge, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom intertwine to generate new phenomena, often in the presence of non-trivial band topology. In this talk, we will describe several examples of how we can use spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy and molecular beam epitaxy to explore emergent electronic phenomena in quantum solids at single atom length scales. We will present our work that enabled visualization of inhomogeneous spin and charge orders in high-temperature superconductors [1, 2] and iridium-oxides [3, 4]. We will then discuss our recent experiments focused on discovering symmetry-breaking orders [5-8] and Berry curvature effects [9, 10] in newly discovered Kagome metals. We will conclude with brief remarks on the prospects for future studies.
