Dear colleagues,

You are kindly invited to the Center for Solid State Physics and New
Materials seminar, which will be held on Thursday, 07. 11. 2024. , at
13:00, in the library reading room "Dr. Dragan Popović" of the Institute
of Physics Belgrade.

The talk, entitled "Use of artificial intelligence for biodiversity
monitoring" will be given by dr.  Anton Gradišek, Jožef Stefan
Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia

Abstract:

Passive acoustic monitoring is a very attractive alternative to more
invasive monitoring methods, when it comes to studies of insects. Our
particular interest here are pollinators such as bees, bumblebees, and
others. Currently, the main approaches are manual observations, which
require people in the field, and these people need expert knowledge, or
collection of insects with traps, which kill the insects, and this is
also not ideal. On the other hand, microphones are cheap and simple to
install and can be deployed at various sites. The challenge here is the
analysis of sound, by identifying interesting sounds, such as flight
buzzes, from environmental noise. I will present a couple of studies
where we were monitoring pollinators with this approach.

Best regrads,

Bojana Višić
