Dear colleagues,

You are cordially invited to the IPB COLLOQUIUM which will be held on Tuesday, 15 April 2025 at 13:00 in the “Zvonko Marić” lecture hall of the Institute of Physics Belgrade. The talk entitled

Partial tomography and verification for scalable quantum technologies

will be given by the recipient of the Marko Jarić Physics Prize for 2024, Prof. Borivoje Dakić (Faculty of Physics, University of Vienna, Austria). The abstract of the talk:

As quantum technologies advance, the ability to engineer increasingly large quantum devices has experienced rapid development. In this context, benchmarking and verifying large entangled systems represent one of the main challenges in employing such systems for reliable quantum information processing. Though the most complete technique is undoubtedly full tomography, the inherent exponential increase of experimental and post-processing resources with system size makes this approach infeasible at even moderate scales. For this reason, there is currently a need to develop novel methods that surpass these limitations. In this talk, we will review novel random sampling techniques [1] that aim to overcome the limitations of standard methods by focusing on partial tomography, which seeks to extract only partial but physically relevant information about the system. Specifically, a probabilistic framework requiring, at most, a single copy for entanglement detection will be reviewed, along with efficient quantum state verification and the concept of selective quantum state tomography, which enables the estimation of arbitrary elements of an unknown state using a number of copies that is both low and independent of the system's size. These hyper-efficient techniques define a dimension demarcation for partial tomography and open a path for novel applications.
