Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to the second event of the HIP-2D-QM Fall
Workshop 2026 lecture series:
Structural Characterization of Functional Materials: Diffraction and
Complementary Techniques
Date: Thursday, 13 August 2026
Time: 10:00
Location: "Dragan Popović" Hall, Institute of Physics Belgrade
Lecturer:
Prof. Ivana Evans
Department of Chemistry, Durham University, Durham DH1 3LE, UK
The Fall Workshop 2026 is a lecture series running from August through
December, providing an engaging introduction to state-of-the-art
experimental characterization techniques available at leading
large-scale user facilities around the world. Designed for graduate
students, early-career researchers, and scientists seeking to broaden
their experimental expertise, the series presents advanced methods that
are transforming research in condensed matter physics, solid-state
chemistry, and materials science.
More information about the lecture series, including the full programme,
is available on the workshop website:

Abstract
The first part of this presentation will introduce the fundamentals of
diffraction, the most powerful technique for the structural
characterization of crystalline solid-state materials. It will provide a
step-by-step explanation of where structural information is contained
within a diffraction pattern and how this information can be extracted.
Complementary characterization techniques, including electron microscopy
and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), will also be briefly
introduced.
The second part of the presentation will focus on selected case studies
demonstrating the application of these techniques to the investigation
of functional materials. The aim is to illustrate the capabilities and
advantages of each method, as well as their limitations.
We look forward to welcoming you.
