Dear Colleagues,

There’s been a lot of media attention for CERN recently around one particular story, after a small animal sent the LHC into standby mode last week.

At around 5:30 am on Friday 29 April 2016, a small beech marten found its way onto a large, open-air electrical transformer situated above ground at CERN, causing a short circuit and cutting the power to part of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The concerned part of the LHC stopped immediately and safely. Since then the entire machine has remained in standby mode.

When the little animal jumped onto the transformer, it created a small electrical arc, damaging high-voltage transformer connections.

Many of CERN’s sites are located in the countryside and similar events have happened a few times in the past. They are part of life of such an accelerator, as with any large industrial installation.

A team assessed the situation over the weekend and found no indication of damage inside the transformer. Repairs to the connections are hoped to be completed by the end of the week, as the LHC continues to prepare for the 2016 physics run.

Internal Communications is still evolving 

We’re making changes to improve how CERN communicates to the internal audience. One thing we’ve found is some people are unsure of where to find important information.

CERN people - this has news published in real-time, it also has official communications, what’s on today at CERN, and events.The Bulletin - issued fortnightly (although the next issue will be later, due to bank holidays), this compiles articles and information about what’s happening at CERN from CERN people page.Feeds — there are several RSS feeds published on the CERN site that provide information about what’s on, official communications and events, find out more about each and how to subscribe here.Events page for scientists

Au cours des derniers jours, les médias ont porté une attention toute particulière au CERN, à cause d’un petit animal qui a mis le LHC à l’arrêt. 


Vers 5h30 vendredi 29 avril 2016, une fouine est parvenue à accéder à la partie supérieure d’un grand transformateur électrique extérieur situé au CERN, provoquant un court-circuit et la coupure de l’alimentation électrique d’une partie du Grand collisionneur de hadrons (LHC). La partie du LHC en question s’est immédiatement arrêtée, en toute sécurité. Depuis lors, l’ensemble de la machine reste à l’arrêt. Lorsque la fouine a sauté sur le transformateur, elle a provoqué un petit arc électrique, endommageant ainsi les connexions haute tension du transformateur.


Un grand nombre d'installations du CERN se trouvent au milieu de la campagne, et des incidents du même ordre sont déjà survenus par le passé. Ce genre d’incident fait partie de la vie de l’accélérateur, comme de toute grande installation industrielle.


Une équipe a évalué la situation pendant le week-end et n'a constaté aucun dégât à l’intérieur du transformateur. Les réparations sur les connexions devraient être terminées à la fin de la semaine. Les opérations visant à préparer l’exploitation pour la physique 2016 du LHC se poursuivent.

La communication interne évolue (suite)
Nous effectuons des changements pour améliorer la communication interne du CERN. Nous avons constaté que certaines personnes ne savent pas où trouver les informations importantes.

Les gens du CERN : Les informations y sont postées en temps réel ainsi que les communications officielles, les conférences du jour et les événements à venir.Le Bulletin  : Le Bulletin est publié tous les quinze jours (le prochain numéro sera publié plus tard en raison des jours fériés). Il regroupe les articles et les informations publiés sur la page « Les gens du CERN ».
